A Holistic Approach to the Appearance of the Skin: An Interview with Dr Leonie Bethge

Which factors have the greatest influence on how our skin looks?

The visible appearance of the skin is influenced by many different factors. These include sun exposure, sleep, stress, nutrition, individual predisposition, hormonal changes and the products we use. No single element determines how the skin looks. It is usually the combination of our everyday habits and a routine that suits our individual needs that makes the difference over time.

What does a holistic approach to skincare mean to you?

For me, a holistic approach means not looking at skincare as an isolated step. A carefully chosen topical routine is important, but so are consistent sun protection, sufficient sleep, a balanced diet and finding realistic ways to manage stress. These elements complement each other and can contribute to a fresh, well-cared-for appearance.

Why is consistency so important when it comes to skincare?

The appearance of the skin usually does not change overnight. This is why simple routines that can be followed consistently are often more useful than frequently changing between different products or trends. Patience is essential, as is paying attention to how the skin looks and feels and adapting the routine when needed.

How can we make a skincare routine more sustainable in everyday life?

The best routine is one that fits naturally into daily life. It does not need to be complicated. A few well-chosen steps, used consistently, are often easier to maintain than an extensive routine. It is also helpful to introduce changes gradually so that it is easier to understand what works well for the individual.

What role do changing life stages play in the appearance of the skin?

The skin's visible appearance can change over the course of life. Many people notice differences in dryness, radiance, firmness or texture at different stages. Rather than following a fixed routine forever, it can therefore be useful to reassess individual needs from time to time and adjust skincare habits accordingly.

What are your most important principles for a well-cared-for appearance in the long term?

My first principle is consistent sun protection. I also recommend a simple topical routine that suits the individual, sufficient sleep, a balanced diet and realistic stress management. Just as important is avoiding the pressure to constantly optimise. A good routine should be manageable, consistent and tailored to the person rather than to every new trend.

What does “beauty from within” mean to you personally?

To me, beauty from within is about seeing appearance as part of a wider everyday routine. How rested and balanced we feel can also be reflected in how we perceive our skin. It is not about perfection, but about caring for ourselves consistently and making choices that feel realistic in the long term.
